Sauna Before or After Cold Plunge? Get the Order Right
Should you sauna before or after a cold plunge? The right order for recovery vs. muscle growth, plus how to finish for energy or sleep.
The order matters more than people think, and the "right" one depends on what you are training for.
The default: hot, then cold
For most people chasing recovery and a clear head, go heat first, then cold. You open everything up, then seal it shut and finish alert. Ending on cold leaves you energised.
The exception: lifting for muscle
If your main goal is muscle growth, be careful plunging hard immediately after a heavy resistance session - cold right after lifting may blunt some of the adaptation. On those days, either skip the post-lift plunge or leave a few hours between them. Sauna is fine.
How to finish
- Want energy and focus: finish on cold.
- Want to wind down for sleep: finish on heat.
A simple contrast round
Sauna 10-15 min → plunge 2-3 min → repeat 2-3 times. Adjust the finish to your goal. This is exactly the ritual our hot-and-cold bundle is built for.
