Infrared vs Traditional Sauna: Which Should You Buy?

Infrared vs traditional sauna compared on heat, sweat, warm-up time, cost and installation - so you buy the right one for your home.

Infrared vs Traditional Sauna: Which Should You Buy?

Both make you sweat. They get there in completely different ways, and the right choice depends on your space, your budget and the experience you want.

How each one heats you

A traditional sauna heats the air - and rocks you can pour water over for steam - to 160-194°F. An infrared sauna skips the air and uses infrared panels to warm your body directly at a gentler 120-150°F, so it feels less intense while still producing a deep sweat.

Warm-up and running

  • Infrared: ready in 10-15 minutes, runs on a standard outlet, easy indoors.
  • Traditional: 30-40 minutes to heat, usually needs a dedicated 240V line, best outdoors or in a dedicated room.

The experience

Traditional saunas give you that authentic Finnish löyly - high heat, steam, ritual. Infrared is milder, easier to sit in longer, and more forgiving if high heat is not for you. Neither is "better"; they are different rituals.

Cost and install

Infrared cabins are generally cheaper to buy and install and slot into a spare room. A traditional barrel is a bigger commitment - more money, more space, an electrician - but for many people that outdoor cedar sauna is the dream.

Quick pick

  • Tight on space, want it indoors, plug-and-play: infrared.
  • Backyard, want real steam and high heat: traditional barrel.
  • Not sure: infrared is the easier entry point.
